President Muhammad Buhari has lamented that military campaigns alone may not be enough to end the banditry and terrorist violence rocking the country. He said that in addition to high military capability, the nation’s local population must join forces with the military by proferring credible intelligence to the war against criminals.
He said, “Our military may be efficient and well-armed but it needs good efforts of the nation’s defence. The local population must also rise to this challenge by proferring information and intelligence.”
In a statement issued by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garbage Shehu, the Buhari warned all terrorists and bandits targeting schoolchildren to desist from the actions as his government will no longer tolerate the destruction of the country’s school system.
The president commended the efforts of the Kaduna State government and the timely intervention of the military which led to the rescue of 180 students plus 8 staff members of the state school system. He, however, urged the security forces to intensify efforts to find the remaining missing students and return them safely to their families.
He commended the efforts of local vigilante in significantly thwarting the work of the kidnappers, saying that a country that has a good intelligence network is a safer place.
