Ochuwa Joy Oyofo studied Microbiology at Wellspring University, Benin-city, in Edo State Nigeria. Here, she writes about her experience and proffers useful advice to prospective students

Writing about an experience that started like a dream just four years back is interesting. I remember clearly when the search began for a suitable university to study this course and the idea was not to choose a private institution. But my dad preferred that we use exactly that knowing the penchant for frequent strikes by public schools. That’s how we settled for Wellspring, and it was a good choice.
When I first arrived, it was like four years was too far, but my dad warned me to beware that time flies; he also told me that I should use every available time because that’s the difference between first-class and third-class students. He said the four years I think about would quickly come and go just like the wind. He told me to get to work and not look back, and I did that. Sure enough, before I knew it, I was outside the University on my way to a new experience in Abuja! The four years, as predicted, came and sept by in haze. I was lucky, I heeded his advice.
For real, studying microbiology at Wellspring University has been as revealing as it was transformative. From engaging with passionate lecturers to forming lasting friendships, my time there shaped both my academic and personal life. The microbiology department boasts of knowledgeable and approachable lecturers. Their enthusiasm for the subject greatly enhanced my learning experience. They were always willing to provide extra help and guidance. I believe their guidance will go a long way in shaping my career and personal life. I was particularly grateful to have mentorship from Mrs. EGHAREVBA, P. A., and Dr. AMENGIALUE, these two people influenced not only my academic life but also my personal life positively.
The practical sessions were valuable and worthwhile. Working in the lab allowed me to apply theoretical concepts, develop essential skills, and foster a deeper understanding of microbiological techniques giving me a hands-on experience of what has been taught by my lecturers. To be frank, the curriculum was not all that simple, it was rigorous. The first two levels were as much easier than the last two, but the final year was tough although having amazing lecturers helped a whole lot. At times, the volume of information was no more overwhelming, leading to stress during exam periods than balancing study time with personal commitments as did constant challenges.
Nevertheless, I was able to form strong relationships with some of my classmates, with whom we all studied together. We were able to navigate difficult topics and prepare adequately for exams by forming study groups. The relationship we built made the learning process enjoyable. The university held several extracurricular activities (especially the student’s week which is a weeklong of different exciting activities) during the time I spent there. Although I am more of an introvert, I made it a point of duty to attend some with my roommates, especially in my 3rd year where I had the best roommates ever, we had and still have a sisterhood bond where we stood up for each other, although I was in a higher level, we clicked like sisters would, not minding our levels or age.
My studies in microbiology heightened my awareness of health and wellness. I learned the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, which positively impacted my overall well-being. Studying microbiology made me pay close attention to my way of living, it improved the way I handled my health matters.
Though not too big, Wellspring University presents the kind of unique learning environment a serious student would envy. Shads provided by long columns of trees adorn the entrance leading to what I call a collaborative and serene environment. The surroundings are well guarded with strict laws governing the movement of students. Because of the small environment, few students have the opportunity to go astray; the security ensures that there are little or no sad experiences.
This was how we conducted our studies and worked on diverse perspectives in our respective areas of discipline, which are essential in the field of microbiology. The state-of-the-art laboratory available in the institution ensured that we missed nothing throughout our careers.
Well now, as I look back, I can understand what it takes to listen to good advice. Now, I can work competitively in this area of profession, because I got down to work and focused on my studies. I can see that I am now relevant which is exactly what my parents wanted. As our plane touched down in the city of Abuja, I cannot imagine what it would have been like to have been told that I failed! Whoa! That wouldn’t have been possible. I have God to thank as I picked up my luggage and walked down the short distance to the car pack where my dad was waiting.
Now I can smile because I have triumphed and am in a position to advise others! The knowledge I gained, the friendships I formed, and the personal growth I experienced have all contributed to shaping my future.
