It was a moment to savour as Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy Phillip Shaibu took the oath of office for a second term in office. The event was held at the tennis court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City on Thursday, June 12. Several dignitaries including the Governors of Sokoto, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa States, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, Nyesom Wike and Duoye Diri respectively. Others present include chairman PDP South-South Chief Dan Orbih, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly Marcus Onobu, Chief Judge of the State Esther Edigin, Commissioner of Police Johnson Kokumo. An incident that would have marred the occasion was the collapse of the ADC to the Governor, but he was quickly revived and the governor hardly knew what happened. Obaseki was elected for a second term in office under the umbrella of the PDP on September 19, 2020, after a titanic battle with his erstwhile godfather. That election effectively sealed the fate of godfatherism in Nigeria. In the course of the struggle, Obaseki was subjected to the most psychological trauma; but, today, that drama is history. His election vindicated the prediction of The Newspaperman that was consistent in the defeat of godfatherism.
