Woman sensation and former Nigeria’s Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has emerged as the new Director-General of the World Trade Center. She is to implement the policy process to reposition the Center, especially at this Covid-19 pandemic period. The General Council decision followed months of uncertainty during which the United States withheld their support.
But after the withdrawal of Ms. Yoo Myung Hee, South Korea Trade Minister, the new Biden Administration expressed strong support for Dr. Okonjo which paved the way for the selection process. 8 candidates had shown interest in the top job to shape the future of the organization.
Amongst those who facilitated the process were David Walker of New Zea Land, Amb. Dacio Castillo of Honduras and Amb. Harold Aspeland of Iceland. Ngozi’s selection was not in doubt as she has been a strong figure in negotiating Nigeria’s debt forgiveness in the days of the Obasanjo administration.
The World Trade Center has shown absolute impartiality which is a sharp contrast to what obtains in Ngozi’s Nigeria under the Buhari administration which has shown an unparalleled bias to non-Fulani. Consequently, very influential appointments have been to the favor of these minority ethnic stock without regard to the feelings of other nationalities.
