Editorial: Bleak Future as Nigeria Slide into Severe Hardship

The grim days are here at last; and now the word ‘unbearable’ might not be enough to convey the exact mood of Nigerians. There are groaning’s everywhere; you could hear some Nigerians muttering unintelligible things; it is coming from the debts of their hearts! Above, dark clouds hover; clouds of uncertainty; they have tried; able bodied men, they leave their  homes, drive aimlessly burning scarce fuel searching for jobs; they struggle with every ounce of energy; they are up against an uphill task;  the available jobs have been cornered by the ever selfish, blind and opaque  government; never before has Nigerians been subjected to this type of protracted sufferings where the citizens are abandoned and left to die; personal debts have become so enormous, some have been reduced to skeleton, the statement in their bank account so meagre as to induce forced hypertension and jack up blood pressure; and you ask what exactly is this APC government up to?

Nations, the world over are putting structures to lift their people from poverty; here, they are strategizing not only to suffocate the citizenry but to level unprecedented misery upon their subjects; this is absolutely not right. After seven and half years in power, and this is all they have to offer, it is definitely not acceptable; There is got to be some form of accountability; if all it takes to gain access to the treasury and loot uncontrollably is to contest elections, then we must be living in fool’s paradise—worse than in animal farm. It is simply that we are not sincere with ourselves; those responsible—the three tiers of power—have abdicated their oath of office; what they have done in case they do not know is betrayal—conspiracy against the people.

They disguise their real intention before elections and afterwards bare their true colors.  Deception! This is far too much a paradox. Government—the supposed trustee of the people—have become the very burden of the same people!  Assuming they are remorseful in their grotesque intentions, that would have been another story; but they are not—and there lies the crux of the matter! The Preacher in the Bible has repeatedly warned of the retributive actions of man: that, all is vanity upon vanity; that, in the process of time they shall come to terms with reality—the frailty of human existence; there is always karma. Do they listen? Experience has shown they don’t; they believe they are immune from the destructive course of nature.

For them, nothing is a taboo; there is no redline they cannot cross.  Look around the streets of Nigeria; the bad products of this crisis ridden APC government is apparent: menacing looking okada riders; roguish Keke Nape riders; hoodlums, urchins and assorted vandals of dangerous proportions; they are all illiterates wondering about in their thousands; no one is safe anymore; you could feel the tensed situation in the air; any moment, a slight provocation explodes instantly into violent confrontation. And who is there to control? That’s how terrorism crept into our annals; same as how millions of souls killed perished under terrorist’s onslaughts; Add the thousands of factories and industries crushed by high cost of diesel and millions of unemployed!

Of what benefit if Nigeria is turned into a state of pariah—where only crude politics is the industry in operation? What are we doing to ourselves? The same old set of people wanting to recycle themselves over and again in government just because they have the means to do so? Let someone pinpoint exactly what characters like Oshiomole is returning to do in office if not to satisfy his insatiable urge? But the rising anger has apparently reached the presidents ears—and the impoverishment; maybe that’s why he said he is tired; many a time his public expression is often vague—awkward; he has since forgotten his mandate to the people—no commitment whatsoever. but his confederates march on with their flourishing lifestyle.

Critics have delivered scathing remarks about the impending doom and inferno of hardship including the president’s abdication of responsibility; yet the same president has poured cold water on any form of future revival by allowing unqualified persons to hijack party machinery and replace him for what might possibly be another 8 years of unbridled stealing. As it is, only God whose name is “Elishama” who has seen the secret tears and deep cry of Nigerians can bail them out. This is no child’s play; Nigerians must pick the bits and pieces and take back their country from the hands of these brigands.  It is a shame what the APC government has turned out to be —real shame.
