Abuja, the Federal Capital is currently reeling from a recent despicable and brutal spousal battery allegedly perpetrated by one Mr. Alabi Uche Sylvanus (66yrs) who was said to have attacked and inflicted life threatening injuries on the victim; upon learning of the attack, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in persons (NAPTIP)swiftly moved into action and rushed to the hospital in Gudu District where the victim had been taken for emergency medical procedure.

The crack NAPTIP team remained at the hospital all through the duration of the medical procedure, during which the victim underwent surgery and resuscitation, and afterwards was transferred to an observation center for further examination.

Following the severity of the case, the NAPTIP team subsequently moved to the identified Jabi residence of the suspect and made several attempts to apprehend him, but were met with stiff rebuff from a certain military officer referred to as General Azi (rtd). And despite pleas from the NAPTIP team to be allowed to gain lawful entrance and apprehend the suspect, the retired general Azi refused to budge, claiming that such a matter was a mere “private family affair”, insisting that NAPTIP had no jurisdiction to intervene in such issues, vowing to resist further attempts to bring the suspect to justice.

Before NAPTIP could regroup, the said retired General Azi had organized and secretly aided the escape of Mr. Alabi Uche Sylvanus to an unknown destination, possibly in preparation to abscond from the country.

But NAPTIP, in order not to be outdone, has quickly raised an alarm and alerted key security agencies, the Nigeria Police, Immigration Service, and the Nigerian Military Command to help locate, apprehend, and bring the suspect to book.

A watch list alert to all relevant security agencies indicating the fugitive intent and possible attempt to flee the country anytime soon has been issued, and the Immigration Service has been notified to “flag” and restrict the suspect’s International Passport from all Exit and Entry points in the country.

Meanwhile, according to NAPTIP’s Head of Rapid Response, Dr Emeh Magnus, a report has been lodged with the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Defense Staff, on the involvement of the retired military officer and unauthorized use of armed personnel, which obstructed the immediate apprehension of the suspect.

NAPTIP is determined to ensure that violent cases of spousal battery do not repeat itself and is bent on bringing Mr. Alabi Uche Sylvanus to justice.
